When I Return

This June, our family went on a trip of a lifetime. After months of saving, planning, and packing, we pulled it off: one week in Paris; one week in Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland. We had held the trip loosely in light of my son’s broken hip, but thankfully, he recovered and was strong enough to enjoy it.

Our trip was so special and precious that I was teetering on the edge of depression when it was over. However, my cousin Janet shared a practice she does on vacation, and it gave me hope. While she visits a new place, she keeps a list called “When I Return.” This notation gives her permission to enjoy the moment, knowing that she is keeping track of the alternative reality that gurgles below every choice made during a limited time. By following this advice, I know that I don’t have to rush around to get everything in. I can savor, stroll, enjoy, and relish in the experience, knowing that I have a plan to come back for the things I missed.

After such a great trip, we all have our minds open to possibilities. The boys can learn a language and study abroad. Cactus and I can plan a more extensive hiking and painting trip to the Alps. Heck, maybe I can even spend another extended period in Paris. This trip has lifted the lid off our small-town mindset and revealed that wonderful feeling of potential.

Here are a few photos from our trip. I have interspersed images of the paintings I did, as well. If you have questions about my travel art kit, please reach out. I’m happy to share!
